Oops! Sorry for the mistake đ¤Śââď¸
A sneaky little marketing idea
Todayâs ⨠free marketing idea ⨠is sponsored by Coframe.
Coframe is an AI platform that A/B tests your website nonstop. It writes new versions of your pages, and launches them as live experiments, without waiting on engineering.
Replit used it to double (!) enterprise demo requests in less than 2 months. Dropbox and Intuit have added millions in revenue the same way.
Itâs also the only marketing tech company OpenAI has partnered with. Try it out:
A Ramp rep sent this generic cold email:
Then a few moments later, they sent the âmistakeâ follow-up:
Honest mistake? I donât think so.
âForgettingâ is a genius marketing trick đĽˇ
The âoopsâ is the perfect reason to send a second email, after the first one was ignored. Hereâs why itâs super effective:
đ§ Psychology: People canât ignore a correction. âWhoops, I forgot somethingâ feels human, so you open the email without thinking. Now the rep got two emails in front of you instead of one, and the second one has the real pitch.
đŞ Spam filters: Cold emails with links are 10x more likely to get dumped in spam, especially the very first one you send a stranger. The filters donât trust a link from someone youâve never replied to.
Genius!
đĄ THE MARKETING IDEA
(1) Send an âaccidentalâ email.
It must be a believable mistake: like a button that links to a dead URL, a wrong date, a body thatâs literally Lorem Ipsum, or a discount that âwent out too earlyâ.
(2) A few minutes later, send the âapologyâ.
Subject: âOops, that wasnât supposed to happenâ. Body: âThatâs on us. Hereâs the working link, plus an extra 10% for the confusion: OOPS10â.
The most successful brands have been doing this for years âĄď¸
My favorite email ever came from my favorite cruise line, Virgin Voyages:
Wait, what? đł Black Friday was still a month away, and Lorem Ipsum is a placeholder in design templates. Did Virgin make a big mistake? (hint: not at all)
A few moments later, another email arrived from Virgin:
Oh, thanks for the apology, Virgin. đ˘
Thereâs a strong chance Virginâs team orchestrated the whole thing on purpose, and nothing was a mistake.
Why âfake mistakesâ work so well đ§Ş
If youâve never tried it, itâs worth a shot:
đ§ Detectiveâs brain: People LOVE catching mistakes, it makes them feel sharp. Just like you clicked on this because of the title.
đ Create excitement: The âmistakeâ doubles as a teaser. Virginâs Lorem Ipsum email told everyone a Black Friday sale was coming, a month before it started.
đ Humanize the brand: Apologizing for a âmistakeâ shows there are real people behind the logo.
đ° Prompt sales: An apology is the most natural excuse to throw in a little extra discount or extend a sale deadline.
Youâll find these all over your inbox đ¤Ą
Youâd be amazed at how frequently this strategy is used. Try searching âoopsâ or âLorem Ipsumâ in your email inbox. Youâll find plenty of examples.
Here are 3 recent ones from my own inbox:
P.S. Donât overuse. While researching this marketing idea, I noticed my inbox was flooded with Epidemic Soundâs mishap emails. They do it every couple of weeks. Pfff.
For everyoneâs sake, only do it once.
Have a great week!
