Telephone operators used to have mirrors in their workstations to look at themselves to make sure they were smiling when talking. Smiling also reflects in the tone of your voice.
I one hundred % agree. You can hear a smile through a phone. This is the easiest advice to give but so few take you up on it. And wouldnโt the world be a better place if folks just smiled more.
I do like people who smile a lot, however for whatever reason I've met people who have a perpetual smile on their face and they have turned out to be untrustworthy. I feel it might be because they lie to make everything seem like their life is perfect. So for me personally I'll always like people who smile a lot but warning sounds go off in my head when it's literally 100% of the time.
The pencil in your mouth thing is a no-no. I believe it was Vanessa Van Edwards that said that doing it like that the smile doesn't hit your eyes like it does when you genuinely smile. And it makes it look fake and insincere which you don't want especially in a professional setting. Better to come across as serious rather than fake.
This also works in social interactions. When I was a young lad going to parties investing a lot into meeting ladies, the one thing that worked best was a big smile on my face when I was at the bar or dancing and the same applied, I had been smiling way before I looked at a girl and that made me stand out and gave me a lot of smile backs. Iโm not saying to use that to pick up chicks, I am saying that if you have trouble with confidence to talk to someone you like, just as I did, remember that a big smile on your face goes a long way and can do a lot. Also smiling is literally connected with nerves which make you feel good so itโs worth to smile even if youโre alone and you think nobody is thereโฆbut you are and it will feel good. Thanks for that post, it did make me smile๐ค๐
I like people that, when you think about them, you can only picture them with a smile on their faces.
LIFE GOALS
This is so true! I started doing it while interviewing founders for my YouTube channel.
Oftentimes, they are uncertain because we see each other for the very first time.
So I show them I struggle during the interview but try to make jokes from that.

Tom! This is so simple yet so impactful. Canโt wait to do this in my meetings today
Wouldnโt have guessed it, even on my 12th try. Not to mention itโs free! Will work on this and see how it goes.

Yes, if the smile isn't genuine, then it can backfire.
Yeah it comes off as fake
O sorriso verdadeiro, ecoa lรก do coraรงรฃo.... este sim nรฃo รฉ falso.
I discovered the same thing while reading books for my kidโjust keeping a โsmileyโ face makes the experience more enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing, Tom ๐ฅ
I've heard a lot of โhacksโ that are either too expensive (โbuy my course!โ), too much effort (โjust build it!), or too ambiguous/fluffy.
This is the cheapest, best cost to impact thing I've seen in a while. Good reminder
I just realized that on Substack you can't react ... with a smile ! I see I can only "heart up" your post. But it did make me smile
:)
A genuine smile shows gratitude for the present moment and optimism for the next moment.
Can't do Telegram, as I don't use mobile devices & Telegram requires one to sign up.
Also, if we're on Substack talking about Substack, why wouldn't you simply communicate with people via Substack?
