Try this "secret" discount page hack 💸
How to increase conversion rates and customer happiness with 1 quick win
When people want to buy your product, they often look for discounts. They search Google for “[Company] coupon code”.
But more often than not, they only find expired or fake codes from random sketchy sites. 😕 Pretty frustrating.
The Hack:
Make your own ‘secret’ discount page and be the hero they’re looking for. 🎉
Here’s how it works: Create a dedicated ‘Discounts’ page on your website with a special coupon code. Don’t link to this page from anywhere else on your site! Instead, let it be discovered organically by customers searching for “[Company] discount” / “[Company] coupon code”. You’ll get ranked #1 on Google very quickly.
I first learned about this genius tactic from my friend Yosi Dahan at ProveSource. This is what their ‘secret’ page looks like:
Yosi told me that hundreds of people have made purchases with this coupon, without any additional promotion. He also told me that the time-to-purchase (after finding the page on Google) is extremely quick.
Would all these customers have purchased anyway, even without a discount code? Maybe. But one thing’s for sure — discovering the secret discount page makes them feel like they’ve hit the jackpot → which leads to higher retention. 💰
Another smart example is Wix:
Their ‘secret’ discount page offers 10% off to everyone.
Now, here’s the clever part: Wix is known for their aggressive “50% OFF” sales, but you usually only get those after publishing a website on a free account. With their 10% coupon page, Wix is capturing potential customers early on, right at the start, before they even have a chance to be tempted by competitors.
It’s a sneaky win-win: Customers feel like they’ve scored a great deal, while Wix saves money (by avoiding giving away the bigger 50% discount to these customers later on).
That’s a really impressive strategic move. 💪
But what if we never offer discounts? 🤔
Recommend your free trial instead (e.g. Headspace)
Offer an extended free trial
Limit discounts to students only (e.g. Wordtune)
Limit discounts to nonprofits only (e.g. Zapier)
Give health workers and military heroes a special rate (e.g. Blue Apron)
Offer an exclusive deal for startups to catch them early on (e.g. Notion) - 🔥🔥🔥
tl;dr: Build a discount page, even if it just says “Sorry, no discounts here.” Worst case, you control the narrative. Best case, you’ve got a new growth lever to pull. 💪
Why it works 🧠
🎰 Customers feel like they've hit the jackpot, even though it’s not really a secret. They’ll feel smart, special, and oh-so-ready to buy.
🏁 Hesitant buyers get the extra push they need to convert. A surprise discount can literally be the deciding factor for those considering your product or service.
💌 You can streamline support by directing discount requests to this page.
🥇 With a dedicated URL, you can outrank those pesky coupon sites for “[your company] discount” searches. Extra organic traffic.
🔗 You may earn additional backlinks from coupon websites that link directly to your discount page, providing another SEO advantage.
Until next time, happy growing! 🌿
