Holy cats! I had no idea sticker mule was doing this. I’ll definitely check that out. For me, it doesn’t seem like a model our company could copy, but there’s definitely inspiration here. Pretty excited to go dig into to it and see.
I feel it's a little silly to say the communities of FitBit, Atlassian, and Unity don't work when they are 10x more active and engaged than the Stickermule community (without having to give away free stuff). The Stickermule folks are ONLY there for free stuff. The other three communities attract people without having to give away freebies.
The problem with this approach - and it's been tried many times before - is people quickly get tired of freebies and participation soon drops. You either need to up the reward to keep people engaged (which isn't sustainable) or move to the same approach which others are doing.
The other problem with this approach is it attracts the lowest quality of engagement. Compare the typical post in the stickermule community with the posts in any of the above three. The quality isn't even comparable.
Fair point. When mentioning Fitbit, Atlassian and Unity - I was mostly comparing them to their matching Subreddits, where people are *much* more active and engaged (without supervision or moderation of the company).
Are they much more engaged though? Take FitBit and Atlassian - the level of engagement and participation is far higher in their hosted communities than on subreddits. We also find the quality of engagement in hosted communities is typically higher because of the moderation benefits.
I think really it comes down to type of engagement. For more casual topic-based discussions, then Subreddits can be ideal. For more focused support / Q&A discussions - then hosted communities still reign supreme.
Thanks for sharing!
I bet more communities will start copying it in the future.

I hope it works, I just registered I wish they had an app. Using govt recognized ID to verify user from the beginning was really nice
